Don't Try This at Home

Fellow model railroaders, I must warn you what you are about to see may cause you some sleepless nights. Then again, maybe this is what you felt like doing as you were assembling one of your model railroad layouts on to your benchwork and realizing your design was flawed.

In any case, don’t go to this extreme.

Visit me at Trains O Scale and learn about model railroading…. without explosives.

Looking For a Hobby? Try Model Railroading

If you’re thinking about starting a hobby but don’t know which one you would like, let me suggest building model railroad layouts.

I’m afraid that many people look at model trains as some sort of children’s activity. It’s only natural because their first experience may have been the toy train sets their parents put around the Christmas tree and then tucked away in the attic or closet for another year.

Sadly, many people associate those inexpensive toys with model railroading and won’t even consider it as a hobby. It’s really too bad because those people are missing out on one of the most rewarding and multi-faceted hobbies that exist.

So let me ask you, what type of person are you?

….if you are creative and artistic, model railroading is perfect for you. You will have a chance to display your talents in designing your scenery, creating everything from mountains and valleys to replica villages and cities. You may also want to “weather” your railcars to make them look more natural.

….if you enjoy working with your hands then welcome aboard. Part of the process of model railroading is in building benchwork. This is the foundation and the platform upon which you will place your layout. This supports everything from the trains and scenery to your weight (let’s face it you will lean on top of your layout from time to time).

….if you like technical challenges you can show off your stuff with model trains. To start with there is the electrical wiring that is required to make sure the train runs properly. Then there is the actual designing of the layouts themselves, one of the most gratifying aspects of the hobby is when it all comes together, like in this video:

This is just the beginning. You will also be choosing what size (scale) of train you want and also the type of model train. There are passenger trains, freight trains, steam locomotives and countless others. You may even choose different size trains for your layout just to add contrast.

Needless to say, model railroading isn’t anything like your parent’s Christmas train. There are so many separate aspects of this hobby that it will keep you occupied for many years down the road. Not only can this be a hobby for you but also for your entire family, with each one of you performing a necessary task to complete the layout.

When you think about it, in how many other hobbies can you work with your hands, your mind and your imagination the way you can with model railroading? If you’re interested and want to learn the basics, please join me at Trains O Scale.

Longest model train?

If you have a lot of money as well as access to a warehouse, you too can build incredibly long model railroad layouts.

The video below shows one layout that is pretty basic, just trains and track, but it is incredibly long. Too bad the guy shooting the video sucks.
Even though it appears there are two separate electric train sets, all those cars are actually all part of a single unit.

If you don't have this kind of room, or money, Trains O Scale can show you how to build your own model train layout to fit your budget and space.

Talk About Loving Model Railroad Layouts...

How much do you love model trains….a little.…a lot....too much….more than life itself?

If you said “too much” then I’ve got the place for you. If you said “more than life itself,” you need some help.

There is a hotel in Tokyo which will cater to your dreams (if your dream involves sleeping with toy trains). I’m not talking about sticking them under your pillow or crawling under the covers with them (that would be weird). I’m talking about sleeping with model railroad layouts set up in your room.

The Washington Hotel located in the Akihabara area of Tokyo has designated one of their rooms as a “railway room.” It contains a bed of course but the rest of the room looks like it’s overwhelmed by the model train display.

Looking at the picture I noticed two things:

1) They never show you what the rest of the room looks like.

2) The train set is larger than your bed. But who needs a bed anyway you’ve got a train?

YouTube Video of the train in action.

This room goes for $265 per night and is booked solid for at least a month. I can see why though, that really is one awesome layout.

I understand that for an additional $200 per night they’ll provide you with a scale replica Godzilla so you can destroy everything in sight. J

If you’re not planning to go to Tokyo soon and want your own model train display, then visit trains O scale to learn the basics of how to build your very own layout.

Dedication

Trains O Scale  would like to salute the dedication and passion that Jesse Bennett has displayed in his 50+ years of model railroading.

“From the railroad track to the freight trains, the locomotives to the buildings, everything handmade piece by piece, transforming his 20 by 50 foot attic into something spectacular”
